“Young Men of Promise”
“Young Men of Promise” off of Yellowbirds forthcoming album Songs from the Vanished Frontier (out May 28th on Royal Potato Family) begins with the lyrics “Meeting you was like a car crash.” Sounds about right. I feel as if I’ve heard that once or twice in my life I just can’t seem to place when or where. Hmmm, anyways. The song grabs you right from the rip. The drum beat pounds these words into yr ears and so begins the perfect popped song. Big statement? Not really.
Yellowbirds is Sam Cohen, a Brooklyn based musician with a sordid past doing his best work right now, literally as we speak. 2011’s The Color was an incredible testament to melody without being a complete ass while doing it. How does he achieve this level!? I’ve found myself wondering from time to time and the only answer that whispers in my brain is balance. Balance, my good friends, balance. Isn’t that what life’s about? No, seriously, is it?
Buy Songs from the Vanished Frontier on May 28th. Don’t fret, I’ll remind you because I care about you.
